D-4 General Training Visa

For Korean-language students, school students, vocational/private-institute trainees, Korean culinary trainees, and corporate interns

The D-4 visa is a residence status for foreigners who undertake education, training, or research at institutions or organizations not eligible under the D-2 student visa. The most common form is D-4-1 Korean-language training at university-affiliated institutes. The maximum stay granted per issuance is 2 years.

Eligibility

  • Valid passport
  • High-school graduation or higher (high-school students are also eligible for D-4-7)
  • Standard Admission Letter from a FIMS-registered university-affiliated language institute, or a foreign educational institution in a Free Economic Zone or Jeju
  • Financial proof for 1 year of tuition + living costs (6 months for language training)
  • Highest-education proof (Apostille or consular authentication)
  • TB screening certificate for nationals of high-risk countries (including Myanmar)
  • D-4-6 requires one of TOPIK Level 2, KIIP Stage 2, or King Sejong Beginner-2 (raised standard since January 2026)

Important Notes

  • !Maximum stay per issuance: 2 years (D-4-6 general training is capped at 1 year from entry)
  • !Part-time work: allowed 6 months after status acquisition. With Korean: 25 hrs/week (30 hrs weekends/vacation); without: 10 hrs/week, weekends/vacations unlimited
  • !School transfers in principle require leaving and re-applying. Exceptions: language institute closure, or TOPIK Level 3+ with valid reason (transfer only to general universities or above)
  • !Leave of absence: restricted for personal/family reasons or low GPA; only illness/accident exempted
  • !Re-entry within 1 year is exempt; 1-2 years requires multi-entry permit (D-4 holders from Saudi Arabia, Iran, Libya CAN obtain multi-entry)
  • !Report changes to name, sex, birth date, nationality, passport, or affiliated organization within 15 days
  • !D-4-6 trainees can do field training after 6 months + TOPIK Level 2 + 90% attendance (max 28 hrs/week, no activity after 9 PM)
  • !D-4-6 trainees who complete 20+ months + obtain Korean certification + finish KIIP Stage 4 may change to E-7 (excluding E-7-4)
  • !Language training of 90 days or less falls under Short-Term General visa (C-3-1), NOT D-4
  • !K-Trainee internship (D-4-2K) is a 9-country pilot — Myanmar nationals are NOT eligible
